(1833-1922)
   painter, portraitist
   Born in Bayonne, Léon Bonnat, after having worked on religious subjects, during the third republic became the preferred portraitist of the leading political figures of the period (Thiers; Jules Ferry). Influenced by the realism of gustave couRBET,he gave a quasi-photographic tone to his portraits and is considered one of the best representatives of the French academic style. At his Parisian workshop, Bonnat's own students included henri de toulouse-lautrec and gustave CAILLEBOTTE. Bonnat left to the French nation a remarkable collection of paintings and portraits, now exhibited at the louvre and the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne.
